In 1996, Aterciopelados released *La Pipa de la Paz*, an album that left an indelible mark on the history of Latin rock. Recorded in London and produced by Phil Manzanera, the album brought the sound of Colombian rock to the world and became the country’s first rock album to be nominated for an Anglo Grammy in the Best Latin/Alternative Album category.
History of La Pipa de la Paz
More than just an album, La Pipa de la Paz was a musical manifesto that blended alternative rock with Andean and Latin American roots, creating a unique sound that defined an entire generation. From it emerged anthems like “Baracunatana,” a song that became a symbol of the irreverent, free, and powerful spirit of Colombian rock.
Today, nearly three decades later, Aterciopelados—an iconic band for Bogotá and for Spanish-language rock—celebrates the 30th anniversary of this historic album with the La Pipa de la Paz tour. A night to reconnect with the songs that defined an era and continue to resonate in the memory of an entire city.
