Exploring La Vaca Wetland with our strategic partner REMAREK

16 de August 2025

One of the primary ecosystems present in our city is the wetlands of Bogotá (humedales). These spaces, rich in permanent or seasonal water, function as ecological connectors between the urban and rural territories of the Bogotá River basin. Their role is fundamental: they act as water regulators, control flooding during the rainy season, and maintain soil groundwater levels during times of drought. Additionally, they store carbon, protect urban biodiversity, and provide key environmental services for communities.

The Urban Wetland System in Bogotá

Today, Bogotá is home to one of the most significant urban wetland systems in Latin America, comprised of 17 District Ecological Wetland Parks (PEDH). Of these, 11 hold the prestigious Ramsar certification, encompassing more than 700 hectares of active wetlands. Although this figure represents only 1.45% of the original area (estimated at 50,000 hectares around 1940), it remains a high-value environmental heritage that requires care and protection.

A Visit to La Vaca Wetland: An Ecosystem in Recovery

In order to recognize our territory and witness firsthand how urban ecosystems are affected by human activities, on July 30th, the Movistar Arena Environmental Sustainability Committee (CSAMA), along with the Association for Recovering Recyclable Materials of Kennedy – REMAREK, conducted a visit to the La Vaca District Ecological Wetland Park. This ecosystem has been highly impacted by urbanization, improper land use, water pollution from domestic and industrial runoff, and the disposal of solid waste (debris, non-recyclable waste, among others).

From Threat to Hope: The Recovery of La Vaca Wetland

A few years ago, the deterioration of the La Vaca Wetland in Kennedy was so severe it was considered irreparable. It was even on the verge of being replaced by an industrial area. However, thanks to the work of the community, the Water and Sewerage Company, the Botanical Garden, and local entities, that fate was reversed. Today, nearly 10 hectares of the La Vaca Wetland have been recovered, proving that even the most degraded ecosystems can regenerate if we act in a collective, coordinated, and persistent manner.

The La Vaca Wetland borders the headquarters of the REMAREK Association, whose members have witnessed the process of degradation and recovery of this ecosystem. In addition to their role in sorting and recovering waste in Bogotá, REMAREK works tirelessly to prevent the improper disposal of waste in fragile ecosystems like this one. Together with the community, they promote environmental awareness, reinforce the value of biodiversity, and help keep this space clean and protected.
