The environment has been profoundly impacted by the demographic and industrial growth of recent years. In light of this, there is an urgent need to promote an awareness oriented toward the sustainable use of natural resources, organized around the three pillars of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental.
Every activity must be conceived and executed from an integral perspective that guarantees the conservation of natural resources while simultaneously satisfying the needs of present and future generations. This approach preserves the regenerative capacity of ecosystems and promotes collective well-being.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) officially established World Environment Day on June 5, 1972, during the historic Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Since 1973, it has been celebrated annually on that date with the goal of raising awareness about environmental care and promoting responsible practices toward nature.
In 2025, the global theme for World Environment Day is “Beat Plastic Pollution,” a message promoted by UNEP and the host country, the Republic of Korea.
This year, South Korea aims to highlight the urgency of reducing our plastic consumption and improving responsible disposal, as it is estimated that at least 11 million tons of plastic waste end up in rivers, oceans, and other ecosystems annually, gravely affecting human health and the environment.
The host country’s strategy focuses on addressing the problem across the entire plastic lifecycle: production, design, consumption, reuse, recycling, and disposal, with the goal of achieving full circularity.
In recent years, World Environment Day has consolidated itself as a key channel for alerting the world to environmental degradation, driving strategies for environmental education, prevention, and the mitigation of ecological impacts.
Each edition attracts thousands of people who participate in activities developed by both public and private entities. In this context, at Movistar Arena, we embrace the commitment to lead in sustainability by implementing concrete actions that reduce our environmental impact.
